United Nations/Islamic Republic of Iran Workshop on the Space Technology Applications for Drought, Flood and Water Resource Management has begun

With the presence of 370 space science experts from more than 40 countries:

United Nations/Islamic Republic of Iran Workshop on the Space Technology Applications for Drought, Flood and Water Resource Management has begun.

"United Nations/Islamic Republic of Iran Workshop on the Space Technology Applications for Drought, Flood and Water Resource Management" co-hosted by the United Nations Office on Outer Space Affairs and the Iranian Space Agency began on Monday morning, August 9, and will continue until the afternoon of Wednesday, August 11, 2021.

The workshop is being attended by 370 experts in the fields of space science, remote sensing, environment, and water resources management from over 40 countries of the World.

The Workshop was formally opened by Ms. Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, and welcoming addresses were also given by Dr. Kazem Gharibabadi, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Vienna-based International Organizations, Dr. Barari, Deputy Minister of Ministry of ICT and President of the Iranian Space Agency, and Ms. Fereidouni, the secretary of the Workshop.

Primarily, the Director of UNOOSA, referring to the watershed problems in the world, stressed the importance of increased use of space technology in natural resources management, especially water. She thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Iranian Space Agency for their effective role in this field and the coordination of the workshop.

Then, Dr. Gharibabadi, while referring to Iran's position in the establishment of the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, noted the effective and privileged role of UNOOSA in promoting the use of space technology in natural disaster management, including early warning and rapid post-disaster response, and called for the development of international cooperation in this area.

The President of the Iranian Space Agency also appreciated the UNOOSA for coordinating the workshop and wished the workshop would lead to the development of international interactions, increase knowledge, develop and promote applications of space technology, and provide international experiences to take advantage of space technology for all countries.

In the end, the workshop Secretary indicated the most important issues to be raised in this workshop and stated the history of cooperation and joint actions of the Iranian Space Agency and the UNOOSA in the field of water resources management.

During this workshop, in the form of six two-hour sessions, experts from Iran and other countries of the world will present their information and achievements regarding the latest methods of monitoring floods and droughts using satellite data, necessary measures for rapid early warning of natural disasters, and assessment of the risks posed by sand and dust and other water-related environmental challenges.
