Satellite-based Earth Observation

Preface

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact. The term is applied especially to acquiring information about the Earth. Remote sensing uses several parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. It records the electromagnetic energy reflected or emitted by the earth’s surface. It is used in numerous fields, including geography, land surveying and other Earth science disciplines (hydrology, ecology, meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, geology…). Rapid advances in Earth Observation satellites have undoubtedly facilitated natural environment monitoring for the effective and optimal protection and management of environmental resources, and the survival and development of human beings.

Remote Sensing Applications

Remote sensing, in a systematic view, is the observation and monitoring of the Earth through the recording of various data from various earth phenomena, data processing and interpretation, and the production of information. In this view, Earth is divided into five main parts:

atmosphere;

hydrosphere;

pedosphere:

biosphere;

anthroposphere

Detailed Tasks of Office for Remote Sensing and Space Observation

Considering the position and governing role of the Iranian Space Agency in the fields of space technology and remote sensing, the main tasks of the office for remote sensing and space observation are as follows:

Preparing and compiling short-term, medium-term and long-term plans for the development of remote sensing in the country;

Capacity building for remote sensing in a different national level(public and specialized);

Developing satellite-based earth observation systems;

Developing remote sensing laboratory infrastructure and equipment;

Technical supervision of remote sensing systems and payloads;

Studying, reviewing, and presenting programs in the field of astronomy for the development of related infrastructures;

Cooperation and participation in international forums;

Cooperation with local and foreign universities and research centers related to remote sensing technology;

Ranking, evaluating, scientifically and technically qualifying companies and private sectors active in the field of remote sensing;

Identifying and specifying remote sensing user community requirements for data, product and service domains, …

Satellite-Based Earth Observation:

Consequences of human irrational activities and global climate change phenomena have created many problems for the inhabitants of the Earth. Iran, as a disaster-prone country dealing with a very wide range of natural disasters, has also been seeking to increase the use of satellite data in the world in past years. In this regard, access to satellite images (archived and online) has been provided for different users, and this has caused a change in the approaches of users in the use of satellite data and information.

Today, remote sensing technology not only is used to identify, study, and monitor phenomena related to the challenges and hazards of the Earth system, but is also considered as a very fast and accurate way to help make the right decisions to reduce the effects of these challenges and risks.

Therefore, the subject of Satellite-based Earth Observation was run in the remote sensing portal at www.rs.isa.ir‌ to introduce the capacities of this technology to the organizations and entities using it. The purpose of satellite-based Earth observation in the remote sensing portal is to effectively use satellite data for identifying and generating parameters associated with dynamic phenomena of Earth's surface in the fields of geosphere, cryosphere and biosphere, and to provide it to related executives and officials.

The satellite-based earth observation technology applications are provided in below main categories:

Disaster management;

Natural phenomena monitoring;

Water resource monitoring and management;

physical, biological, and chemical compositions of the Earth monitoring;

Environmental monitoring

Satellite Imagery Sector

It consists of satellite images taken in Mahdasht Space Center and free available satellite images. The images taken daily at Mahdasht Space Center include MODIS (from the two Aqua and Terra satellites), NOAA , FY2E, Landsat and Sentinel series satellites.

School of Remote Sensing

Remote sensing technology education for user community, especially children and adolescents, students, and its promotion among them are considered as the main governance programs by the Iranian Space Agency. Therefore, the Office for Remote Sensing and Space Observation has prepared and launched its specialized training section in the field of remote sensing in the form of a school for students at various school levels, university students, and administrators.

In the school of remote sensing, educational materials are provided in the form of text, images, tables and educational videos from the based level to the highest specialized level for those interested.
