Given the variety of activities taking place in the field of space technology and space issues around the world, the necessity to establish a single organization in our country seemed inevitable and an undeniable need. Fortunately, space technology had been considered by our officials, experts and specialists for many years, and this attention has led to countless positive achievements so far; however, lacking a special single-trustee organization to direct centrally these activities and put them in the right main direction prevented the optimal and correct use of these resources.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the few countries in the Middle East region that has a long history in the field of satellite communications, and has introduced itself to the world as a leading country in the field of aerospace since 1969 by participating in some international space-related forums.
As stated above, the formation of an independent and centralized entity in the field of space in our country was inevitable, and the absence of such organization to attend national and international forums was strongly felt in the country. In this regard, according to Articles 8 and 9 of Resolution 68159 dated 22/9/2003 of the Islamic Parliament of Iran, the Space Supreme Council was formed with the chairmanship of the President and the membership of relevant institutions, and based on this resolution, the Iranian Space Agency was established. Accordingly, the President of Iranian Space Agency is the Secretary of the Space Supreme Council.
Following the approval of the State Supreme Administrative Council on 29/9/2010, the Iranian Space Agency was separated from Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T.) in 2010 and joined with the Presidency Office after merging with several research institutes active in the field of space research from Ministry of Agriculture Jihad and Ministry of Science, Research and Technology.
With the start of the 11th State and the approval of the Supreme Administrative Council in February 2015, Iranian Space Agency was affiliated to Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (I.C.T.) in accordance with its Articles of Association.
Policy-making and determining the main policy of the Government in the field of space is one of the duties of the Space Supreme Council, and Iranian Space Agency is also responsible for implementing the approvals of the Space Supreme Council. Since the decisions taken by the Space Supreme Council are comprehensive and have domestic and international dimensions; consequently, the tasks of Iranian Space Agency will be very serious and comprehensive. It is the most important tasks of this organization to acquaint the public and the country's officials and planners with the human achievements in the field of space technology and its applications ranging from the most basic and obvious daily needs to the most advanced ones. In short, it should be emphasized that Iranian Space Agency is the sole entity managing the governing activities of the development of space technology and the peaceful use of outer space.
It is necessary to mention that our country, continuing the path taken so far, has always tried to take advantage of human scientific achievements for peaceful purposes and improvement of the living conditions of the public, and moving in this direction our country has been and will be in interaction with the States and the international organizations. Iran’s membership in international gatherings related to this goal, including the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Use of Outer Space (COPUOS) and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) confirms it.
